Description

French onion soup is a comforting classic that warms the soul with its rich flavors and gooey melted cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large yellow onions (sliced thinly)
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 6 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 1 crusty baguette (sliced)
  • 2 cups Gruyère cheese (shredded)
  • 4 sprigs fresh thyme (or 1 tsp dried thyme)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and sugar; cook for 30-40 minutes until golden brown.
  2. Add Broth and Wine: Pour in beef broth and dry white wine. Stir well, scraping any bits from the bottom of the pot.
  3. Season: Add thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 20-30 minutes to meld flavors.
  4. Prepare Bread: Toast baguette slices until crispy.
  5. Melt Cheese: Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls, top with toasted baguette slices and Gruyère cheese. Broil until bubbly and golden.
